Some magazines indicate that fabric flowers will be a big fashion hit of the upcoming spring-summer.

In fact, the yoyo flowers began to appear in the catalog of large department stores, in cloths and accessories in general. So, to seize the moment, I decided to make some for me as a test, before making them for friends.

I made a simple flower, composed of three layers of red fabric. The tiara can also be replaced by a safety pin, transforming the flower into a modern brooch.

 The worst is that, because of the ornament, my colleagues who are less attuned with fashion trends have called me a “prenda” (a kind of hillbilly of the state I live in). It was not at all complimentary, but it didn’t kept me from being a success with my exclusively accessories.

Algumas revistas indicam que as flores de tecido devem ser a grande novidade da moda primavera-verão.  De fato, as flores de fuxico começaram a aparecer no catálogo de grandes lojas de departamentos, em diferentes em roupas e assessórios em geral. Então, para aproveitar o momento, resolvi testar primeiro comigo, antes de presentear as amigas.

Fiz uma flor bem simples, composta por três camadas de tecidos vermelhos.  A tiara pode ainda ser substituída por uma “joaninha”, transformando a flor em um broche moderno.

O pior é que, por causa do enfeite,  meus colegas menos antenados nas tendências da moda me chamaram de “prenda” (uma espécie de caipira, aqui do Estado onde moro). Isso não foi nada elogioso, mas não me impediu de fazer o maior sucesso com meu acessório exclusivo.

One of the things I like best in quilt is the ability to create from things that would normally be discarded.

Think of the amount of boxes we throw away every month – those which lost their color, were stained with time or had the surface torn when taking of a label.

Consider also the huge number of other things that end up in the garbage because they do not preserve a pleasing look after being manipulated for years and years.

Consider even those scraps of fabric that always remain after each new quilt project is finished – so small that they couldn’t be used in another project. And there goes a few good meters…

We are living in a time of growing environmental concern, where the responsibility for what we consume and discard should be taken into account. Thinking about it, I decided to make a new project joining quilt with the idea of recycling.

The other day, I took some ugly and old boxes – one of them has almost ten years – and a handful of small fabric scraps and tried to figure out a way how to use them. I used a special scissor to even each scrap edge and cut them into geometric shapes.

Then, with strong glue and brush, I began to paste the pieces of colored cloth one by one on the surface of the boxes.

(As a teenager, long before I became interested in quilt, I was already looking for interesting ways to decorate my boxes and covers of books.)

What about the result? Instead of sending the boxes to the trash because they were ugly, I got a new one, very beautiful and unique. I’m event thinking in making some to give away – or to pack my gifts to friends.

Maybe that is a great contribution of quilt to change how we act and adopt an attitude of preservation of the planet.

Uma das coisas de que mais gosto no patchwork é sua capacidade de criar a partir de objetos que, normalmente, seriam descartados.

Pense na quantidade de caixas que nos desfazemos todos os meses – aquelas que perderam a cor, ficaram manchadas com o tempo ou ainda tiveram a surperfície rasgada quando tiramos a etiqueta do correio.

Pense também no número enorme de outros objetos que acabam tendo o lixo como destino porque eles não preservam uma estética agradável após serem manipulados por anos e anos.

Pense ainda que, em cada novo projeto de patchword que faço, sempre sobram retalhos e retalhos de tecidos – tão pequenos que não poderiam ser reaproveitados. E lá se vão bons metros…

Estamos vivendo em um momento de crescente preocupação ambiental, em que a responsabilidade com o que consumimos e descartamos deve ser levada em consideração. Pensando nisso, resolvi fazer um projeto que aliasse o patchwork à ideia de reciclagem.

Dia desses, peguei algumas dessas caixas feias e velhas – uma delas tem quase dez anos – e um punhado de retalhinhos e tratei de pensar em como reaproveitá-los. Usei uma tesoura de picote para fazer com que os retalhos tivessem uma borda uniforme e não desfiassem, e resolvi cortá-los em formatos geométricos.

Depois, com cola forte e pincel, comecei a colar um a um os pedacinhos coloridos de tecido na superfície das tampas e das caixas.

(Quando era adolescente, muito antes de me interessar por patchwork, já procurava maneiras interessantes de decorar minhas caixas e capas de cadernos.)

O resultado do trabalho? Em vez de mandar as caixas para o lixo porque estavam feias, ganhei outras, bem bonitas e originais. Penso até em fazer algumas para dar de presente – ou ainda para embalar meus projetos e dar aos amigos.

Talvez aí esteja uma grande contribuição do patchwork para mudar o modo como agimos e adotar uma atitude de preservação do planeta.

Months ago, we went to a new restaurant that opened recently here in our city. The place is very cozy, with low lighting and very tastefully decorated. It’s so cool how the environment has been created that causes immediate empathy in those who visit the place.

Among the various decorations items that on the walls of the restaurant, the one which most drew my attention was a frame with a fabric I have. Indeed, it was not a framework – but a quilting hoop.

Obviously that on the next day I went searching for quilting hoops to do something similar. The first I found was made of wood, but had an inconvenient screw that takes out some of the piece’s aesthetic sense. Then I got a more modern version, made of plastic, and finally at the third attempt I bought a model without screws, made only two wood circles.

Once you have all the necessary tools it is so easy to prepare the frames that I don’t dare calling it a technique. It consists only in choosing a beautiful printed fabric, extend it in the hoop and set it right, to leave the fabric well stretched. Combined with another frame, gives a special touch to any environment and serves as a beautiful gift.

Meses atrás, fomos a um novo restaurante que abriu recentemente aqui em nossa cidade. O lugar é bem aconchegante, com pouca iluminação e com uma decoração de muito bom gosto. É tão bacana o modo como o ambiente foi criado que provoca empatia imediata em quem visita o lugar.

Dentre os diferentes enfeites que revestem as paredes do restaurante, o que mais chamou minha atenção foi um quadro com um tecido que tenho. Na verdade, não era um quadro – e, sim, um bastidor.

É claro que no dia seguinte já saí em busca de bastidores para fazer algo semelhante. Os primeiros que achei eram de madeira, mas tinham um incoveniente parafuso que tira um pouco do senso estético da peça. Depois encontrei um modelo mais moderno, feito em plástico, e finalmente na terceira tentativa consegui um modelo sem parafusos, composto apenas por dois círculos em madeira.

Tento todos os materiais, a confecção dos quadros é tão fácil que nem mesmo sei se pode se chamar de técnica. Consiste apenas em escolher um belo tecido estampado, estender no bastidor e fixar bem, para deixar o tecido bem esticado. Combinado com outro bastidor, dá um toque especial a um ambiente e serve como um belo presente.
