I’ve made a lot of  gifts this year. While a couple of friends are having babies, other are getting married.

Because I was very busy at work I didn’t have time to make another quilt.  So I had to pick a quicker project but with a touch of sophistication.

After hours going through all my magazines I found a different placemat project combining the traditional Nine Patch block with the Seminole technique. In my opinion it looks much better than the magazine.

As a final touch I used the beautiful backing fabric to trim a box and put the placemat set.

Fiz muitos presentes este ano. Enquanto alguns amigos ganharam bebe, mas outros estão casando.

Como a coisa ficou agitada no trabalho, não tive tempo de fazer outra colcha. Por isso, tive que escolher um projeto mais rápido mas com um toque de sofisticação.

Depois de horas procurando em minhas revistas, encontrei um projeto de jogo americano bem diferente, combinando o tradicional bloco Nine Patch com a técnica Seminole. Na minha opinição ficou muito mais bonito que a revista.

Como toque final, usei o lindo decido do verso para forrar uma caixa e colocar todo o jogo americano.

Keeping the “start from the basic” strategy, I began making my first quilt following a guide from Patch e Afins magazine where each volume teaches a different block and a set of basic techniques.

I couldn’t think on a place to hang this quilt so I choose to use each block to make a cushion for my guest room #1. Because this room was way too white, the multicolor cushions gave a whole new life to the environment.

To make a consistent back support I also made three big cushions with jeans fabric (one side with the dark face and the other with the light face of the jeans).

Vivid colors and traditional blocks for every taste – pick your favorite:

• Nine Patch – Most classic block that demands very precise cuts of each square

• Log Cabin – Although it gives a illusion of hard work it is really one of the easiest blocks to make and gives a huge variation of lay out combination

• Rail Fence – Simple combination of 3 or 4 strips but I had a really hard time getting it right since the measures of the magazine were incorrect

• Dresden Plate – Difficult pattern that needs manual intervention

• Maple Leaf – Simple use of triangles since there is no need to mach vertex

• Churn Dash – Beautiful combination of squares and triangles is very good way to learn how to mach vertex

• Ohio Star – Vertex matching medium challenge because the easier is not always the one you have more fun sewing

I still need to work on a quilt for the bed, but I can decide how to combine all colors and/or blocks. Any suggestions?

Mantendo a estratégia de começar pelo básico, eu iniciei a fazer meu primeiro quilt seguindo um guia da revista Patch e Afins onde cada volume ensina a fazer um bloco diferente além de um conjunto de técnicas básicas.

Como eu não consegui imaginar nenhum lugar para pendurar o quilt, resolvi usar cada bloco para fazer almofadas para um dos quartos de visita. Porque este quarto era muito branco, as almofadas multicoloridas deram uma vida nova para o ambiente.

Para fazer um suporte consistente para trás eu também fiz três grandes almofadas com tecido jeans (um lado com a face escura e o outro com a face clara).

Cores vívidas e blocos tradicionais para todos os gostos – escolha o seu favorito:

• Nine Patch – um dos bloco mais clássicos exige cortes precisos de cada quadrado.

• Log Cabin – apesar de parecer difícil é um dos blocos mais fáceis de fazer, além de possibilidar com diferentes posições uma grande variedade de efeitos.

• Rail Fence – simples combinação de 3 ou 4 tiras, mas eu tive dificuldade de acertar porque as medidas da revista estavam errada.

• Dresden Plate - bonito mas difícil padrão que necessita de intervenção manual.

• Maple Leaf – simples forma de usar triângulos já que não há necessidade de alinhar nenhum vértice.

• Churn Dash – bela combinação de quadrados e triângulos é ótima maneira de aprender a alinhar vértices.

• Ohio Star – desafio de nível médio para alinhar vértices, porque o mais fácil nem sempre é o mais divertido você tem uma costura.

Eu ainda preciso fazer uma colcha para a cama, mas não consigo decidir sobre como combinar todas as cores e/ou blocos. Alguma sugestão?
